The Complexity of Simplicity
What makes something truly simple? Is it the ease of a task, the absence of complexity, the familiarity of a routine, or the number of steps it takes to get something done? The answer isn't always as straightforward as it seems.
Over the past several years, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what simplicity really means, especially when it comes to building a brand. In the process of creating Pedaling Bear, I’ve come to realize that simplicity is rarely as simple as it looks. The idea behind Pedaling Bear was simple: create comfortable, timeless clothing that looks sharp without trying too hard. On paper, it sounded simple enough. In reality, it was anything but.
From choosing a name and designing a logo to sourcing cotton in another country and finding a trustworthy manufacturer in a place I had never been, every decision came with a new set of challenges. What started as a seemingly simple idea quickly became a process filled with details I had never anticipated.
Eventually, I began to look at simplicity differently. Maybe simplicity isn't about avoiding complexity. Maybe it's about working through it until only what matters remains. The goal was never to take the easy way out. It was to make something that felt effortless because of the thought, time, and care that went into it. I believe some of the best things in life are simple on the surface but carry a much deeper meaning underneath.
Take the Pedaling Bear logo, for example. At first glance, it may look like nothing more than the outline of a bear. But look a little closer, and you'll begin to notice the details woven into its design. The open lines and subtle curves give the bear a sense of movement and freedom. Even the way its legs are drawn serves a purpose. What might appear to be a few simple lines to one person can represent something entirely different to another. The same philosophy carried over to our shirts.
Choosing Pima cotton was an easy decision. I knew what made it special, and it aligned with everything I wanted Pedaling Bear to represent. Its softness, strength, and durability made it a natural fit. It was a material that didn't need to rely on flashy features or bold claims. Its quality spoke for itself. Of course, choosing the right cotton was only the beginning.
When you look at our shirts, you might think they look like any other shirt on the market. And that's fair. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel. We believe in the classics, in the pieces you reach for day after day, and in making them just a little bit better.
The difference often comes down to details you might never notice at first. An extra inch of room across the chest. Another half inch in the armpit. A bit of added length in the sleeves. A little more room in the main body. A four button design to allow you to wear it to your comfort. Small adjustments to the fit that can make a meaningful difference in how a shirt feels throughout the day.
Those details weren't accidental. They came from measuring, testing, revisiting our original designs, and making adjustments until we felt we had it right. It was a process of constantly questioning what could be improved, even when the changes seemed almost insignificant. That's what simplicity means to us at Pedaling Bear. Not less thought, but more intention. Not a lack of detail, but knowing which details matter most.
I think about how something as ordinary as a lightbulb was once an extraordinary challenge. Today, we flip a switch without giving it a second thought. We rarely stop to consider the years of experimentation and refinement that helped make it possible. What now feels simple was once anything but.
In many ways, I think the same can be said for a great shirt. You shouldn't have to think about the fit, the feel, or how it moves with you. It should simply work. But getting to that point takes more thought than most people will ever see. Perhaps that's the beauty of simplicity. It's complexity that has been refined over time, until all that's left is what matters.
At Pedaling Bear, we've spent countless hours working through the details so you don't have to think twice about them. Our goal isn't to make clothing that demands your attention. It's to make clothing that earns a place in your everyday life. Simple in appearance. Thoughtful by design.
We hope you enjoy wearing our shirts as much as we've enjoyed bringing them to life.
Cheers,
Thomas and Maggie
