The Story of Pima Cotton

The story of Pima cotton stretches back thousands of years. Cotton from the Gossypium barbadense species, which includes modern Pima cotton, has deep roots in South America, particularly Peru, where cotton has been cultivated for centuries. Over generations, this fiber became prized for its exceptional qualities. In the early 1900s, American agricultural researchers began developing varieties of extra-long-staple cotton in Arizona. The crop was named Pima in honor of the Pima people, who helped cultivate it at a United States Department of Agriculture experimental farm. This marked an important chapter in the development of modern American Pima cotton. Today, Pima cotton is grown in several countries, including Peru and the United States, and remains a favorite for premium textiles.

This style of cotton particular grew well in the northern region of Peru due to warm climate, fertile river valleys, and irrigation-supported agriculture offered favorable conditions for cultivating this extra-long-staple cotton. Over the following decades, production expanded, helping establish the region as an important center of Peruvian Pima cultivation. One of the most important differences about Pima cotton lies in the length of its individual fibers, known as staples. Pima cotton is classified as an extra-long-staple cotton, meaning its fibers are longer than those of conventional cotton varieties.

Why does that matter? Longer fibers can be spun into finer, smoother yarns with fewer exposed fiber ends. The result is a fabric known for its soft hand feel, strength, and ability to retain color through repeated wear and washing. For something as simple as a T-shirt, these qualities make a meaningful difference. The fabric feels smooth against the skin, offers a refined finish, and provides the durability needed for everyday life.

At Pedaling Bear, we believe the everyday essentials deserve more thought than they often receive. We are drawn to materials with a story, products made with intention, and designs that remain relevant long after passing trends have disappeared. Peruvian Pima cotton reflects that philosophy. Its long fibers offer a naturally soft feel and the potential for a durable, refined fabric. Its history connects modern clothing with a much older tradition of cultivating and working with natural materials.

We do not believe clothing needs to be complicated to be exceptional. A well-made shirt, a comfortable fit, and a material chosen for its quality can be enough. That’s why we chose the Bear of all cottons: Pima.
